I think you should pursue what works best for you. Honestly, I think there are many roads to success. But for me, I would never try to use a huge tuba like the 601 as a regular instrument. Just look at all the guys that have similar tubas like the Meinl-Weston 2165 or the Yorkbrunner. None of them (to my knowledge) use that size of tuba as their primary instrument. They all seem to have a smaller 4/4 type tuba. The last thing I'd like to be doing is having to play soft, softer, and softest on a big monster tuba because the orchestra switched Music Directors (say, Zubin Mehta to Kurt Masur for example).
