Try slowing down your air and approaching this model tuba somewhat more gently (with good support and alot of air). The mistake that I am prone to make is being too aggressive with my air (too much, too fast and not paying attention to what makes the tuba work best). My experience is that this mistake makes a smaller tuba either edge out or back up in my face (it can also make a larger tuba sound bad). Also, my opinion of the William Bell Meinl-Weston is that it is a superior tuba that can be used in an orchestra (and as an excellent all-around tuba). I hope that this is of use.

good luck and have fun with a great old tuba,
