Just because the tuba is a low instrument doesn't mean that it can not sound good to others or be played as good as any other instrument. I believe that any instrument can sound good, even bells and whistles, pots and pans. It depends on what is being played, how it's being played, how it's arranged, etc. It doesn't matter what instrument it is. Sure, the music community is less educated about the tuba's capabilities but if you demostrate something that shows off the potential of the instrument and play it well enough I assure you people WILL recognize it. Thus, the people who stereotypes your instrument will learn something.

So bottom line is make music, play it well, stay proud of your instrument and let the chips fall where they may.
