Well, my own "quest" seems to be finished, at least for the groups I'm in now. What I've got is a both agile & weighty BBb, and while it's not as light & clear as an F or Eb, nor as dominating as a 6/4, it'll do what I need it to do.

My original post wasn't looking for instrument suggestions, actually. I just kept noticing that the typical "quintet tuba" is a small horn, but when a big horn is used, the other players say that they like it a lot (at least in the anecdotes I've heard). There seems to be a discrepancy there, and I was wondering what others here thought of it.
