Repairman?!?!? Just get a hacksaw and do it at home!!! Really, what can go wrong, get an old mpc and cut chunk out of the cup, end of story. That's what all the guys did in my college class and they got results. As for getting it replated, the chance of getting your mouth into contact with the bare brass is zip so you don't really need to worry about that front.
Cutaways are awesome. Improves your tone out sight and helps your slurring and smooth playing as well as intonation. Should be part of everyones basic kit, but do yourself a favour, don't let some repairman talk you into getting one made or even worse, buy one new, DIY.
