I have bought many insturments over the years for my school and when I first started out I always went for the cheaper instruments, but not anymore. I have a closet full of worn out Amatis and Jupiters that barely lasted 10 years and are now junk. From now on I only buy major American brands that I know will last. 10 years from now when you need a valve guide or some other such part for a Weril or a St. Pete or Olds or any other "budget" brand, will you be able to get it? If you buy a King, Conn or a Bach you may not be getting the best instrument, but you know it will last and be servicable until you retire. And personally I think they are very good instruments. Certainly better than most of the students who use them!
