I have several pre World War II Martins. I had the metal of one of these analyzed by a metallurgist and it was made from this same "Low Brass". I own one Martin from 1956 which is identical in design, but plays nothing like the older instruments. I'm willing to bet that this later Martin is made from "cartridge" or "yellow brass". It's still darn good but not the same. Could it be that "cartridge brass" was made in such quantities during World War II that it was used from then on, even for instruments? I assume that "cartridge brass" was made for just that...cartridges.
