Church Contacts!!
I've lived in my area for about 6 months now, and already have augmented my income by about $1,500 a year from playing with Church groups alone. That's just playing the tuba with whatever ensemble they already have(or in one case, playing with their bell choir). Don't think so much about how much the church is going to pay you, but how many people in the church will hear your playing... band directors, restaurant owners, college professors, and even potential students.
A church on every corner in this country is one of God's greatest gifts to musicians.
