Dave had one of the first prototype Conn CC's when I met him around 1969. When he came to Connecticut again with the Black Dogs about 20 years later he was using an old BBb sousaphone rigged to shoot a blast of flame and smoke at the push of a button. On one of those trips he handed out cassette copies of Tubas From Hell to all the other tuba players. Apparently he traveled a lot with that band, and he went through sousaphones like other people go through styrofoam cups. Last time he came he was using a fiberglass sousaphone which he called a "tupperware tuba". He also wrote a great series of columns for the West Coast Rag, and they were worth the price of a subscription.
