Well, I don't have absolute pitch, nor do I have any degrees, but I CAN hear the difference between A440 and A442 - the highet pitch (although ever so slightly) does produce a brighter tone in most instruments, while tuning flat (A438) gives a darker tone.
Give it a try some time - get your hands on a tape player (I know ... old technology) with the ability to vary the tape speed. Play the same song a few times with different tape speeds. Believe it or else, most people hear the difference in pitch as a difference in tone/charater/whatever.
