I agree with Charlie. I have played 983's at his TubaStore next to a 981 and my own 982. The 983's I played were much freer blowing in all registers than these other compensators. However, it is a different horn than the 3+1 uprights, and far different than the larger EEbs such as the Willson and company. Incidently - Charlie's store is a great place (free plug for the guy).
