I know a number of people who have double majored successfully, whether it is performance and math or performance and psychology. A bachelors degree in tuba performance can become a "pre-med" or "pre-law" with an addition of a class or two. This gives the college student the option of going on to law or med. school or to pursue another music degree.I was a a double major in tuba performance and music education and they both made me a much better musician. Yo Yo Ma is another performer with a degree outside of music.
To more directly answer the original statement; for me the tuba teacher was not the most significant factor in determining a school. It was a combination of the teacher, location away from home, reputation of the school, the facilities, financial aid and mainly the students I meet when I auditioned there.
