I played electronic keyboard in a jazz quartet that was asked to do an "outside party". We later learned it was in a field with no electricity. So, after renting a generator for power, buying extra cords, etc., we had shelled out about $50 of our own money before the gig ever began (this was back in 1978). After we were done, we got our payment... a case of bad beer. And we were even underage. I wanted to turn the guy that booked us in for giving beer to a minor, but my sax player wanted to keep the beer...and he did for about three days until he drank it all.
I had forgotten about that episode until I had read all the other bad payment stories. Thanks for the memories!
