It amuses me to draw parallels between the stereo market and the computer market.
In both, for a very long time you could buy a "competent, entry level system" for about $1000. As the technology improves, the price remains constant. A classic case of "what the traffic will bear".

That's because they are listening to the music, not the "sound".

In the alternative, it's because even the best reproduction is so inferior to live music
that the further degradation caused by using bad equipment hardly matters.
