I played between the two in rehearsals a several months ago.
I performed on the optional tuba part, while the 2nd trombone part was covered by one a fantastic bass trombonist.
I have a recording of the American Brass Quintet doing it in the "original" instrumentation. I do, however prefer it with the tuba. Makes for nice chorales and really brings out the harmonic texture.
Super piece. I highly recommend it if you've never played it or even heard it.
