I have to admit that I'm mildly curious to blow on a Miraphone 1290 because of the radically different design this horn has compared to past Miraphone products. But I'm concerned about the overall quality of the horn. I've spoken with two players who have played these tubas (one, a very reputable and respected symphony player) who didn't have good things to say about the 1290. In fact, both were currently selling 1290's when I talked to them. I'm also dubious at the prospect of the 1290 having a sound at all similar to the Rudy. I have no idea what it is that Rudy does with his tubas but the only horn I've ever played that even came close to that characteristic Rudy sound was an old Alexander. It would be nice to have alternatives for that type of sound. After all, Rudy can make only so many horns per year.

My opinion for what it's worth...
