An example:

When I was in the seventh grade, I played that simple Rubank solo "In the Hall of the Mountain King" with my sister accompanying me on piano. The first time we tried to play together, the horn was a half-step flatter than the piano.

My parents called the band director, who had me play a tuning note for the strobe tuner, and it was perfect. The horn was sent to the shop to be sure, and my parents paid the going rate to have the piano tuned (finding out that it was already pretty close).

Weeks passed without a solution to the problem, until one day the problem went away and then we all knew what had happened.

Know what happened?

Hint: I played a plastic sousaphone...

...with a removeable bell.
