Being a player of both types of horns (B&S Symphonie and Yamaha 822) I can generalize the differences simply with the valves. Every rotary valve F tuba I've tried has these problems while most piston valve horns are relatively solid in the low register. I know there are exceptions, and if you know any (rotary German F) that does not have these problems, and still keeps that characteristic sound, please let me know!
