It should go without saying that before you drop any significant amount of money on a horn, you need to play it first. Just because it sounds great to someone else doesn't mean it'll work for you.
Having said that, if you really mean "valves", I can't see what difference a valveset alone would make, with everything else being equal. York valves were not the best in the business and substituting a modern quality set would probably improve things considerably.
