Spend over $5k when for less than $3k you can have an equivalent/superior horn? Given the budget restraints of many musicians, especially students, 3 "professional" quality horns isn't always a feasible option... when the price of just one of those horns is cut in half, though, it becomes just a bit more economically viable.
Sure we'd all love to have horns that play themselves, but give me the $3,000 saved in exchange for a little extra time on the horn any day! Besides, if one can sound good on a $1,500 tuba, they've only got room to improve when they can afford to upgrade their equipment... the opposite isn't neccessarily true.
