Be sure that the linkage is lubed and well-adjusted (i.e. there isn't much, if any, play in the ball & socket joints). Some rotary valve oil in all the linkage joints and on the spindles of the rotors can go a long way. If you have the time, take it to a repairman and ask him to lube the valves for you. If you call ahead, s/he might be able to do it while you wait - it would probably take about 20 minutes and shouldn't cost much.
