Much of the work comes after the fact, to pay off student loans. And much of it, for the more fortunate among us, comes before, in the form of work done by our parents, the fruits of which are saved and then paid to the school.

Then there are lots of students who go to cheaper schools, even though they are less prestigious, because that's what they can affort. Or, they persuade the military to pay for their schooling, which the military seems pleased to do. Or, they are so good that they persuade the college in question that their presence is more important than their tuition.
