You are correct as far as the improper workmanship concerning the valves of the aforementioned 3/4's. Your repair knowledge greatly exceeds ours.
To each his own... if one prefers piston or rotary, each has thier misgivings.
If it were not for well meaning fathers, would there be much repair work?? (of course gig bags!!)
