I think the most obvious reason is because "that is the sound you really want". For instance, others have mentioned that certain pieces lay better or sound better on a Bass Tuba instead of a Contrabass Tuba. But what do you do with pieces that weren't even written for tuba? Orchestral players are asked to perform Cimbasso, Bass Trombone, and Ophicleide (among others) parts. Now, which do you think has the better chance of sounding like an Ophicleide, an F tuba or a CC tuba? I just think the application of a little common sense is all that is required when trying to make the music the composer intended. I try to avoid the whole "square peg in round hole" kind of thing.

Ironic that you would mention that Mike uses an F for the Rite. That is one piece I really prefer a CC on, despite the tessitura. Of course, not a 6/4 CC...
