At my old school, we had 2 bands, Symphonic and Concert (symphonic being the highest).
My band director had what he refered to as Musicianship Tests (3rd class, 2nd class, 1st and Master Class). Each consited of things like scales, 2nd up inclided Harmonic Minor, rythems, tone, knowlege of instrument, and other things of that sort.
To be in the Symphonic band, you needed to pass both 3rd and 2nd class test.
I know, it sounds easy, but its really wasn't quite as easy as it looked (at the time mind you)
It worked really well. We had one of the top bands in Florida. We had a wonderful director, Andrew Jack Crew. I would not have the appriciation for music that I do if I didn't have the honor of being in his band...:*)
