Consider the recent auditions for principal trumpet in Chicago. Craig Morris was the last guy standing during the first audition, and didn't receive enough votes to get the job. He didn't go to the next audition due to a scheduling conflict, and went back through the preliminary round in the third and final set of auditions, eventually coming out on top and winning the job.

Moral of the story: Just because someone doesn't get the job the first time around doesn't preclude them from getting it later. It just means the circumstances weren't right the first time around.
