Ace,
Dillon's "dressed" the slides on their own when I took it to them it had those patches which you mention. However, the unplated nickel silver can usually be polished up by using 3M Scotch-Brite pads (those green ones that are in the kitchen section of the store next to the sponges, don't use imitations they suck) and LIGHTLY buffing the slides. This stuff can and will remove metal, in fact I use it to "lap" in slides without lapping compound. I can only attribute this trick to Fred Powell, who was once with Lawler Trumpet, then Kanstul, and I know think UMI (I've heard that he has been somewhat instrumental in their brass revival). I can't recommend this stuff highly enough for light buffing and cleaning of unfinished surfaces.
