Mary Ann, I believe I made the posting on the TubaEuph list. Briefly, find a board about 1" thick, and about 2" wide. Drill a hole slightly larger than the tubing through the board and take a utility-knife blade and tap it edge-first into the wood, such that the point of the blade extends a little less than halfway into the hole. Thread your tubing in from the other side and pull it through until you've slit enough for your purposes.

The benefit of using a jig like this is that the cut is very straight, giving a nice clean appearance to the job.
