I've just started playing an F tuba and I've noticed that I can play higher on my large BBb than on my small F, using the same mouthpiece. I suspect that this will become a non-problem as I get used to the F, but I did find it interesting.

I also play euphonium, and I can't play nearly as high (yet???) on tuba as on euph - further, I find it much less tiring when playing extended high stuff if I use a smaller mouthpiece on the euph.

I also tried a fluegelhorn once at a dealer just for fun and at it played pretty easily witout a lot of tension - at least for me!

So I think you're right in that there is definitely something going on here that seldom gets mentioned in these discussions.

Inquiring minds want to know!
