That one's easy to remedy. Don't inhale through the horn when you borrow a mothpiece. Otherwise, one just as much at risk of getting this herpes from sharing the same horn let alone the mouthpiece.
Regardless, I doubt the student had this in mind while refusing to use the band director's mouthpiece. I'm not a pathologist, but I am sure there are things around a band room that would safely disinfect a mouthpiece with *very* little chance of contracting disease or illness from it.
