Ihave done the reamings, here suggested by Dr. Young, with hand tools. One of these a modified smoking pipe reamer. Very cheap.

My experience with opened up backbores say:

Much freer blowing.

Much fuller sound.

Much more control over intonation. One general drawback will be a relative flatness of the range around the 4th partial. Easily remedied by good breath support and a good embouchure.

Much freer top range. Again with the demands mentioned above.

Much increased demands on a clean articulation of tongued notes.

Very much increased demands on breath control in lower dynamics.

Much louder dynamics before breaking up.

Much less tolerance for a bad day.
