I think placing R. Strauss in the romantic era is a tough sell. some of his work shows a sense of humor I don't think you necessarily associate with the brooding romantics. Keep in mind that Also Sparch was a story(?) by Friedrich Nietzsche, who was definitely _not_ a romantic.

However from my experience, the post-romantics are usually Schoenberg, Mahler and those cats, "extending" the work of wagner and brahms (thus 'post'-romantic).

Try google, and make sure you have some sort of litmus test you go by to categorize if you have to slot these composers. otherwise the labels are (even more) meaningless.
