Also sprach Zarathustra was written in 1896. Richard Strauss was not considered a composer in the romantic era, technically, he is a post-romantic composer.

In my mind, he is kind of a hyper-romantic composer (*my own term), because he took the principles that Wagner, and the other Romantic composers established, and streched them, exagerating the ideas, while maintaining much of the earlier composers' spirit. He is a bridge between the Romantic composers, and the composers like Schoenberg, Webern, & Berg.
