Why is it that people seem to skimp on the music? I played a wedding with a brass quintet at the Plaza in NYC not too long ago. These were people with LOTS of money (not Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, but pretty rich). We were paid $200 apiece, got there an hour before to talk things through, played some prelude music, a processional, one piece during the ceremony, and a recessional. Pretty basic stuff...total time around 2 hours. I was happy with the money until I overheard one of the family members bragging to the piano player that they had spent $50,000 on flowers, and $75,000 on the reception. And $1000 on ceremony music. We either need to become florists, or stop being afraid to ask for more money! Why do people skimp on music? Because we let them.
