Good call. The statue is a representation of the Buddha. If I recall correctly the right hand is in the "teaching" position. The left hand, cupped with palm upraised, demonstrates the Buddha's compassion to save all things. These hand positions together encourage us to learn the dharma through meditating on emptiness. If anyone on the list is better versed on this than I, please offer correction.
