There's a reason why the brass, let alone the tuba sits at the back (especially in the orchestra). The brass sound actually has a poisonus edge to it that is quite deadly. It's all the timber of the stringed instruments infront of us that absorb this poison, protecting the audience from certain death. That's why bass trombone players play so loud. Since they can't kill anyone with their poison, they try to scare them to death!

PS. Now you know why string players are like they are!
