This is correct.....I've watched some people go through the horn grad program here at the U of A. It does not have a top horn teacher, but I've seen two people get professor positions after graduation, at smaller schools. It was what they wanted to do, though; they wanted to be college profs, not playing pros. Both are fine players, but not the level you'd need to be to get into a major symphony.
If your goal is to play at top level, you'd be best off to do what you have to do to get that kind of training.
