When I was a young lad, my school didn't have air-conditioning. We had fans that would have done an ATR-100 turbofan engine proud, that in congress sound like a flight of B-17's taking off in formation. If you sat at the back, you had to be able to read well because you could hear the lectures.

The real trick was writing papers with your arm suspended in mid-air, to avoid soaking the paper with sweat (no, I'm not making this up).

Air-conditioning is good.

Of course, I grew up in Houston. The loss of air-conditioning there is akin to the loss of heat in Minnesota during the winter--the media would have to keep a body count.

Teachers and curricula that don't target academic excellence...well...that's another matter.
