As much as I've contributed to the whole discussion of German versus American sound concepts, I think it would have to be a pretty exceptional high-school player to get a recognizable example of either on any given instrument. I'm 44, and only on some days do I think I can do it myself. If an instrument has a characteristic tone and plays in tune, then a school ought to think it's ahead of the game.

I'm assuming that the 20J's were mounted on tuba-tamers. Of course, that makes it a bit of a challenge for the student to take home and practice, but it is possible--I took home a sousaphone body for practice every day from the 7th grade on.
