Doesn't compare to either tuba. This instrument has a real "York" quality - an open, resonant sound that is closer to the french horn family than trumpet or trombone. Yes, obviously, it's conical as are all tubas, but you get a real sense of it when you play it.

I'll sound different from you on your tuba and using your mouthpiece - anybody will, so, yes, you really need to play it yourself in your environment and judge for yourself. It's a great instrument, in my opinion (and several others - including Gene Pokorny).
