Barry - I have just read your latest opinion on British tuba players and feel that I would
now like to comment.How are your views on a live Mahler concert relevant to an inquiry
regarding a recording of Shostakovich released 5/6 years previously ??
I have been following this board for a couple of years now and have enjoyed doing so and
indeed learnt a lot by doing so.However I notice that this is at least the third or maybe
fourth time you have felt it necessary to make such comments about British tuba players
and particularly Chris McShane,formerly of the RPO.As a Brit I now feel it is my duty to
stand up for our players.Firstly, where have you played yourself on a big stage ???
Secondly, two bits of advice;
1)Find the recording mentioned by the enquirer - Shostakovich 3 / 12 and then feel free
to comment.
2) Don't ever practise/warm-up in a room next to Mr McShane (on whatever/any tuba) as you
may regret your comments.
As an aside I should also say that he would,as a humble and modest person himself, be the
last person to comment on a fellow tuba player's performance in public whatever his view.
Enough said ??
