In my opinion, the modern Miraphone 186 tubas as good nowadays as they ever were.  The valves are probably better.  The 186S is simply a cheaper horn, in both cost and quality.  They are both good sounding horns.  My personal opinion is that the Miraphone 186 is probably the most versatile instrument this is.  I have owned a CC with 5 valves since I bought it new in 1974, and have performed in many, many different types of performances.  I use it in brass quintet, band, tuba-euph, etc.  I have even used it when playing with a symphony orchestra.  It is not ideally suited for this and I might have a tough time getting the N.Y. Phil gig with it, but it is possible.  I have never regretted buying it.
