The group is the Irvine Valley College Wind Ensemble. It's a community college located in Irvine, California (a little less than an hour or so south of L.A.). The group is something out of Bernard Hermann's worst nightmares - 5 tubas, three bassoons, three bass clarinets, two bari saxes. I feel lucky to have a group like this to play in, and would have to say it's one of the best community college bands in the state. If we met more than one night a week, we'd probably be pretty deadly.
The 188 and 186 in the back row are school horns, both less than a couple years old. The other three horns are personal axes. We play at the Irvine Barclay Theater, on the campus of U.C. Irvine. The hall is *really* nice, and with the tuba section up on risers, the bottom end's pretty bottomless.
Our final concert this spring is April 30th, if any Tubenetters happen to be local and would like to stop on by for a listen.
