In addition to what Lew has said, I would try to get together with an other tuba player in school (be it yours, or another). You could find out from him or her what the scales are supposed to sound like in the octave(s) the sousaphone/tuba plays. The mention of possible leaks and such, is very valid. If you are able to get another person to play the horn, they could probably note any glaring problems with leaks and such. Sousaphones are notoriously hard to get in tune. Oh, BBb, CC, etc., refers to the tuning note of the horn. Think of concert middle C as C; an octave down is CC (so on for Bb/BBb).
