Sorry to hear of the misfortune. I, too, have brittle teeth. Recently I had a chunk break off the corner of one of the front teeth. I opted for the composite glued in and it seems to be working just fine.

I would not be afraid of the crown at all. I have several crowns now and, while grinding off what is left of the tooth sounds terrible and feels the same way, it does work quite well. The first thing done is to get a temporary put on. You may not be able to play for a couple of weeks, but then when you get the replacement, it will be just like the original except stronger. The crown is glued to the nub.

If there is enough tooth left to fasten something to, then don't have a replacement or root canal done.

I wish you luck. The worst part as far as I'm concerned is the needle in the mouth. Everything else is a piece of cake.
