i once owned a meinl 2145 that i absolutely loved and it worked really well with our college orchestra (university of goergia). i actually played pictures at an exhibition (minus bydlo..done on a small f tuba) on my mw2145. it has great projection and can get a nice dark sound if played right. the thing it lacks is breadth and wideness of sound which i found in another instrument. the 2145 is a great all-around tuba to do it all with. if you can stand to pay extra you should check out the 2155 which can get a little bit broader sound with less work and you can still very much make it work in 5tet and on solos. e-mail me privately if you'd like ot hear some sound clips of some 2145 stuff with orchestra or a solo. good luck in your search and PLAY A LOT of tubas in the process.
