An bass instrument with a bore of only 0.455 inch will easily fill stuffy. A mouthpiece with a large cup will not help to relevie that feeling.
My suggestion for such an instrument will be to use one of the better and quite underrated V. Bach mouthpieces: the #3 plain ( that is NOT 3).
If any modifications, then not an opening of the throat. Rather a barrel shaped opening of the backbore. Aside from increased sound such a modification will give room foran increased intonation control by means of embouchure, ressonace, and air pressure.
