Yes, making a cup deeper will darken the sound. However, it'll also lend towards shrinking your octaves, in terms of intonation. The same is true for increasing the throat bore size. A very wide m.p., with a very deep cup and a big throat will sound GREAT, but will give you the greatest tuning problems too. Everything is a trade-off. In my experience, increasing the size of the backbore (not the throat) actually makes the m.p. a bit brighter sounding. It also helps intonation.
