In my humble opinion, Rudy's (not just 5/4's) are excellent for use in an orchestra. I have two that I am using at the moment, one a 4/4 that seems to work best with the trombone section and horns, and a 5/4, which the bass section loves to sit on. Rudy's have not gained the favor of many in North America, I cannot say why. I strongly disagree with a previous post that the 5/4 is obsolete because of the PT 6. I have played many (PT6), and they are also good, but different..as most different brands of tubas are. I see a great deal of publicity regarding the PT line, as well as Hirsbrunner and others, but little advertisment regarding Rudy's in general. This may be one of the reasons for the ideas regarding these instruments. Try for yourself. Also check out the 3/4 Rudy C, it is a fantastic instrument for jobbing and recording. Full sound with less brass to lug around.
Just my thoughts. DK
