Are you talking about the Principle Clarinet of the Met? He won the job around that age, but it is a different organization. Still impressive however. But the young'n clarinet player (Ricardo Morales?) had professional experience with the Florida Symphony Orchestra already.
NYPO will take whoever plays the best, that usually seems to be someone who is already serving the same functional role in an already existing and high-caliber group.
